Description
Leah adopted Brummagem in June, 2024. Brummagem has a bit more rehab before she can start being ridden and Leah is looking forward to doing groundwork and creating a partnership as she waits to restart her undersaddle.
Original Post:
Brummagem is a 5 year old, 16 hand, chestnut mare who came to After the Races by way of Beyond the Wire in Maryland. She raced 15 times and retired after her last race in November of 2023 when she injured a tendon. "Brumby" is by Kitten's Joy and out of a Wildcat Heir mare. This means she has El Prado (IRE) in her pedigree along with some other classy stallions.
Our vet has been following Brumby's progress since arrival and Brumby keeps meeting all her benchmarks throughout her rehabilitation. She's now turned out with a group of other horses. She gets along very well with the other mares in her field and is enjoying being a horse! We expect she'll need a few more months of just turnout and being a horse before she's ready to go back to any level of work.
While her tendon will likely scare away resellers and upper level riders, she is not expected to have hard limitations long-term. Most likely she can still do jumping through mid-level eventing or equivalent without concern once she's completed her rehab time.
Brumby is smart, kind, and a real joy to work with. Even on stall rest she was nothing but quiet and easy to handle. Our vet and farrier have been continually impressed by her. All of our volunteers can groom on her or even give her a bath. Aside from some mild cribbing she has no other vices. The cribbing has improved with turnout as well.
This mare is sweet enough to be a family horse one day (with training!) or an adult amateur horse. If you're the type of person who wants a sweet, in your pocket kind of horse, she will fit that bill!
