South Fleet was adopted in December, 2024 by Nina. Nina fell in love with "Captain" as soon as she met him and was so happy to get to take him home with her locally in Pennsylvania.

South Fleet, "Captain," is a 16 year old, bay gelding that originally came through After the Races at the end of 2012. He was adopted in early 2013 by the Philadelphia Mounted Unit and served as a police horse for almost 12 years! He was just retired from police work, and as we adopted him out originally, we were given first option to take him upon retirement and of course we said yes!

Captain arrived barefoot and a bit footsore but we got shoes back on him and he's transitioning well to just having the front shoes. He's currently turned out with two young, OTTB mares and our companion pony Styx (when she's not working!) and gets along well with them. He has no vices and is still sound and up for another adoptive home, hopefully a forever home this time!

Our vet evaluated him a week or so after arrival. She found him sound with no known limitations. He will need someone with a good farrier though as his hoof angles need correcting (his heels are nearly on the ground!). But if you're willing to give him some good shoes, and know he's 16 so will likely need some maintenance at some point soon, this guy is going to repay you tenfold for your commitment.

After 12 years of patrolling the streets of Philly, working everything from protests to Phillies Games, day and night, this guy should be fairly solid in a trail or pleasure home. We will be getting on him soon to make sure he still knows his stuff, but the police put a lot of training into their horses, including some good dressage moves for maneuvering tricky situations. We imagine he'll do just fine.

UPDATE 10/30/24: Captain has an eye issue we are currently treating. He'll need to finish treatment before he can be adopted but we're hoping it won't take more than a couple weeks.
