Lookin Back is a 4 year old bay mare who recently arrived by way of Aftercare Charles Town. She is by Lookin at Lucky and out of a Stormy Atlantic mare. She retired after 35 starts, with her last race in December of 2022.
Lookin Back has some changes to her knee that were radiographed prior to being donated to ATR. The vet who evaluated her at the racetrack thought she'd do very well after some time off. Our veterinarian thought she looked great on arrival, nice and sound. We agreed to give her some turnout to let her be a horse and see how she feels in a month or two, but...
... Lookin Back had other ideas. During her first turnout she somehow got stuck on top of one of our (very blunt, wide, wooden) fence posts, tearing her pectoral muscle pretty severely along with the surrounding skin. Amazingly, it has healed tremendously well and she's nearly done with her recovery. A lot of this is due to the fact she is an absolute saint and wonderful patient. She could not have been kinder when we were dealing with stuffing and wrapping a massive chest wound on a daily basis.
She's now happily back on full turnout and has not yet impaled herself again, so she should be getting close to ready to rock and roll. Her wound has healed most of the way and is just in the last stages of closing up. A wound-savvy person would have no trouble seeing it the rest of the way as there's no wrapping involved. That said, we are NOT rushing her out the door.
But, she's so nice, it'd be silly not to consider her for most reasonable riding goals.
