Lookin Back is a 4 year old bay mare who recently arrived by way of Aftercare Charles Town. She is by Lookin at Lucky and out of a Stormy Atlantic mare. She retired after 35 starts, with her last race in December of 2022.
Lookin Back has some changes to her knee that were radiographed prior to being donated to ATR. The vet who evaluated her at the racetrack thought she'd do very well after some time off. Our veterinarian thought she looked great on arrival, nice and sound. We agreed to give her some turnout to let her be a horse and see how she feels in a month or two, but...
... Lookin Back had other ideas. During her first turnout she somehow got stuck on top of one of our (very blunt, wide, wooden) fence posts, tearing her pectoral muscle pretty severely along with the surrounding skin. When asked what her chances were of a full recovery, our vet surprised us by saying 100%! Unfortunately, it will just take a very long time to heal and so she's in rehab now until she's able to get more exercise again.
For what it's worth, Lookin Back has been an absolute saint as a patient. She has a massive open wound we have to stuff with gauze every day, and she has air collecting under her skin which we massage out, and she cannot be any kinder. She lets us clean and repack her wound every day without sedation or issue. She's very trusting and very sweet and exceptionally quiet.
The point being, once this mare heals up, she's going to make one potential adopter very, very lucky.
*She is NOT yet available due to her injury and lengthy/precarious recovery*
