Description

Liam's the Great is a 4 year old, 16+ hand, grey gelding who came to us in partnership with Beyond the Wire in Maryland. He retired at the end of November after his 10th race. He is by Liam's Map and out of a Mineshaft mare and once sold for $80,000 as a yearling!

Liam is a funny, curious, playful guy. He was just gelded in January but for the most part you would never know (though he can be a little playful with his mouth). He loves to be groomed by volunteers and enjoys any attention sent his way. Liam has a great brain and has handled the early stages of his rehab for a tendon injury with grace. He has no vices and has been such a good patient. He is progressing well and just graduated to being able to enjoy daily turnout in a small paddock! He goes out with one other gelding for company and the two seem to get along great.

The details: Liam retired with a mild-to-moderate bowed tendon (right front) that should not be a limiting factor on his next career once healed. However, we asked our vet to ultrasound his right hind where he reportedly had a deep laceration in August of 2024 affecting the tendon (SDFT). Our vet found it remarkable that there seemed to be no adhesions with both the DDFT and SDFT sliding well on physical exam, in spite of remarkable scar tissue of the SDFT.

Even though he did race on it, we would rather be conservative and find him a home with a low-level job to set him and his adopter up for long term success! We know there are plenty of folks out there that enjoy riding on the flat from dressage to trails to all-around pleasure. Our vet thinks he could conservatively do up to 2' jumping for fun as well.

Liam is available to someone who capable of responsibly completing his rehab, comfortable restarting a young horse off the track, and with reasonable goals for their next partner! He is currently enjoying small turnout, so his rehab needs are not intensive, he mostly needs time and a repeat ultrasound every 2-3 months before being cleared to go back to work.
