Description
Liam's the Great is a 4 year old, 16+ hand, grey gelding who came to us in partnership with Beyond the Wire in Maryland. He retired at the end of November after his 10th race. He is by Liam's Map and out of a Mineshaft mare and once sold for $80,000 as a yearling!
Our vet's evaluation confirmed he had a mild-to-moderate bowed tendon in his right front that she expects to do very well. Liam also has a noticeable scar on his right hind from a laceration he sustained in August of 2024. Even though he went back to race on it and it's not currently a concern, we did ask our vet to do an ultrasound. She found that while it had significant scar tissue, it remarkably did not seem to have any adhesions, with both DDFT & SDFT sliding well on exam.
Liam is a funny, curious, playful guy with a bit of mouthiness that's not unexpected as he was just gelded in January. He loves to be groomed by volunteers and enjoys any attention sent his way. He has been a very good patient and good in the barn, with no vices. He's been progressing well and currently has access to a stall with a small hospital paddock attached. He loves sunbathing in his paddock!
Very conservatively, we believe Liam will be able to go on to any low-level job once through his rehab for his right front tendon. However, our vet may end up clearing him for more once he's turned out and getting more exercise, when we can better evaluate if that scar tissue in his right hind will be very limiting. That said, it's best potential adopters with serious jumping/eventing goals look at other horses as our goal is always to set our horses up for long-term success!
Liam is available now to someone who is capable of responsibly completing his rehab, comfortable restarting a young horse off the track, and has a low level type job in mind for him. Liam would be eligible for our Recover at Home Program. He requires a small, hospital type paddock though will likely be cleared for more in early April when he's due for his next ultrasound.
