Description
Hard Luck Phil is a standout, big-bodied, 16.1+ hand, 4 year old gelding that came to us in partnership with Beyond the Wire in Maryland. This handsome guy is covered in dark spots with a few little white splashes thrown in. Not something you see every day at the racetrack! He is by Golden Lad and out of a Domestic Dispute mare meaning Medaglia d'Oro, El Prado (IRE), Seeking the Gold, Unbridled's Song and others are fairly high up in his pedigree.
While he is unraced he was in training at the track and his last workout was in late spring of 2024 when he had a small tendon injury. Coming back into work this summer he injured it again and this time his connections decided to let him retire with ATR to be rehabilitated and eventually find a new home outside of racing.
While our vet expects him to have a good prognosis and we received a few images from an ultrasound in June, we're going to do our own ultrasound closer to August. Until then he is enjoying rest, TLC, and lots of attention in the barn. He's a big sweetheart with one of those kind, worried faces that is incredibly easy to fall in love with.
We will post more as we have it but expect he will be one that needs 9 months to a year of total recovery time. Should the right adopter come along that's equipped to handle his care and give him time off, he is eligible for our Recover at Home program.
Stay tuned for his next update when we take a new ultrasound around August 1st!
