Grumpy's Buddy is an absolutely adorable, sweet, kind, 5 year old gelding who came to us in partnership with Aftercare Charles Town. He stands at 16.3 hands but has a gentle giant demeanor. Grumpy (a barn name that does not reflect his personality) is by Bahamian Squall and out of a First Dude mare and is a grandson of Gone West.

Grumpy raced 27 times and last raced and was in training a year before coming to ATR. He retired and recovered from an apical sesamoid fracture prior to coming to ATR. His owner had him on the farm most of 2025, giving him lots of time to be a horse and heal. Grumpy made an instant good impression on everyone here, including our vet. While he will be looking for a low-level home, she thought he had a great personality and prognosis for being someone's all-around pleasure horse, trail champion, or even babysitter one day once he's had some retraining.

This big guy has been great to handle, groom, and manage since arrival and gives such good vibes that on a frigid, incredibly windy morning our manager decided to just hop on him in the ring and see what he would offer. She said he was a gentleman, good for the mounting block and happily walked around the frozen ring, including over poles. She did just a tiny bit of trot to evaluate his behavior and said he just put himself in a little frame and bopped around. It was too frozen to do much at the trot but she was very pleased with his effort, especially with having almost a year off! We expect he'll be very amateur friendly.

He's good for the farrier and vet, is currently barefoot, and has no vices. He's turned out with two other geldings currently without issue.
