August Recap

In August we adopted out two horses, Fiona and Sprig of Lilac. Fiona went to a great couple (Karen and Jay) just down the road where they are starting her under saddle and having a lot of fun with her. They seem to agree that she has one of the best minds of any two-year-old we’ve ever seen!

We also recently adopted out Sprig of Lilac who went to Amy in New Jersey. Sprig will enjoy a life of trail rides, paper chases, hunter paces, and just FUN with her new rider! After all the hard work this mare put in at the track and then having to change hands so many times since, it is truly appropriate for her to be in such an amazing home.

We have several new horses that are worth looking at. If you are looking for a competitive horse, check out any of our new guys: Our Shady Lady, Syllogism, Dazzling Reality, or Muskwa. Though if you ask me, Our Shady Lady and Syllogism are the two to consider if you’re in it for the ribbons! If you just want a FUN ride you can take out on the trails or trailer to state parks with, think about Indy Knight or one of our other geldings.

These horses need homes. Share our website and Facebook page with your friends, write a recommendation (ask me how), or come by and visit when you get the chance!

501(c)3 Status & Fundraising Coordinator Wanted

As of last week we are officially pending our 501(c)3 Federal Tax Exemption Status.

What this means is that we anticipate that we will receive a Letter of Determination within the next several months. Everything donated up to 23 months prior to that Letter of Determination will be tax deductible (as well as everything after). This means that you, as a contributor, can donate if you are willing to also assume we will get accepted. There is the risk we will get denied, but we are anticipating approval without any problems and hoping we will receive the Letter of Determination by this winter if not sooner.

For the record, no goods or services will be provided in exchange for your donation. Your donation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Please consult your tax advisor as to the deductibility of your donation.

All that aside, we are really very excited! We hope to start some fun fundraising events soon and any help doing so at this point would be greatly appreciated.

Hot and Dry

The heat wave is stretching on and on, but we’re still working away here at After the Races. Recent horse news includes Joint Account going to his new home and Just Turn West officially pending adoption. I’ve been told Joint Account is doing great, and has even met his first cow! The family who has him is in love and hopefully they will have many happy years together.

Horses this month haven’t been easy on us. We’ve had a couple small injuries, and continue to treat horses who came to us in need of some pretty serious rehab. Sedation, x-rays, and ultrasounds are common here, and costly! We’ve had a few generous donors step up to help us with the costs, but still have a long way to go. Two new horses arrived yesterday, one recovering from a soft tissue injury that has what we call “jelly bean ankles” and another who has a recently fractured sesamoid. The latter has his leg in what’s called a gel cast which will be replaced soon with some good support bandages, but has a long way to go.

In good news, Sprig of Lilac should be ready to see potential adopters soon, as well as Contesa and Indy Knight. Sprig has gained a lot of weight and been going on short rides which we are soon to start increasing. Contesa is gorgeous, and ready to start more serious work, and Indy Knight is going to start going on short rides this upcoming week. We hope to have an update on him soon!

Please keep sharing the good news, and if you know anyone looking for a horse, or project, please send them our way! These horses have big hearts and a lot left to give and many can go on to just about any discipline. They just need a second chance.
